Being so close to the beginning of the year, only a few events are worth noting….
January 3rd, 1892
In Bloemfontein (Orange Free State), South Africa, J.R.R. Tolkien was born. He was a writer and a poet who wrote The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy; the latter took him more than ten years to complete and both are considered by many the best fantasy literature ever written. He was teaching at Oxford, first as a Professor of Anglo-Saxon and later as a Professor of English Language and Literature. He also helped with the translation of the Jerusalem Bible. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on March 28th 1972. He would die on September 2nd 1973, in Bournemouth, UK.
January 3rd, 1924
On November 4th 1922, Howard Carter and George Herbert make an outstanding discovery: the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen, near Luxor in Egypt. It contained thousands of objects and, only after several months, on January 3rd 1924, a stone sarcophagus, which contained a very well conserved mummy inside of young Pharaoh Tutankhamen, was brought to light.
Newspapers were talking about the Curse Of The Pharaohs, striking whoever was involved in the profanation of the tomb. Detailed investigations have found no evidence of this at all.
January 3rd, 1959
Purchased by the US from Russia in 1867 for 7.2 millions dollars (around 120 millions of today, less than five dollars per square kilometre), Alaska was first administered as a district by the military.
On January 3rd 1959, after the Congress had approved its conversion the year before, Alaska officially became the 49th state of the United States of America.
January 3rd, 1962
Cuba Prime Minister Fidel Castro, the leader of Cuba at this time, was excommunicated, together with several leaders of the Cuba communist regime, from the Catholic Church for violating a large number of the Roman Catholic Church’s Code of Canon Law.
